2016 Journey of Hearts & Hands
Rock the Mission

“The Lord is my rock ... in whom I take refuge.”

~ Psalm 18:2

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we begin our Diocesan Appeal, Rock the Mission, with hearts and hands renewed by the youthful vigour of Jesus Christ. We are invited by this year's Appeal to encounter Jesus Christ, not only ourselves, but to allow our institutions to open wide their doors, Holy Doors of Mercy. We really want the whole Church in this Diocese to become an encounter with Jesus Christ, who is the Rock of our refuge, who is our secure hope, who is the One who can truly bring healing and peace and, indeed, the joy of Good News." (excerpted from the 2016 Journey of Hearts & Hands Appeal video)

Psalm 18:2 reveals that the Lord is our rock, and in Him we find refuge. We know there are individuals and communities who are fragile and wounded, and who need His refuge. The Lord’s refuge is not only about His protection for us, but also speaks to the vastness of His unending mercy and love.

Our response to that love is service. God calls us to be missionary disciples to people in need. God’s mercy and love encourages us to be willing stewards of the gifts with which He has blessed us, and willing servants of His compassion, hope, and love. God calls us to be a refuge: to care for His family and for one another.

This year’s theme, Rock the Mission! invites us to look outward to where the needs exist; to tenderly accompany those who need the comforting refuge of God’s love; to journey in mercy and faith to the peripheries, reaching beyond the borders that can separate us, bringing Jesus’ message of hope to communities, families and individuals.

The funds we raise through the Appeal help to support programs and ministries that allow us to care for God’s family, and for each other. I invite you to consider making a pledge to be paid over the next twelve months. All gifts to the Appeal are greatly appreciated, and more helpful than you may imagine: they are an investment in the mission God has entrusted to us.

Thank you for helping us be the hearts and hands of God's saving mercy and love for people in need.

In Communion,

Most Reverend Gary Gordon
Bishop of Victoria
