Blessed Junipero Serra OFM to be canonized by Pope Francis
As liaison bishop for the Serra club in Canada, I recently met with members of Toronto’s Serra club to encourage their work and prayer for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life of men and women. Today, Blessed Junipero Serra OFM, patron of the Serra club, will be canonized by Pope Francis in a ceremony in Washington DC.
Fr. Junipero Serra OFM was a Franciscan missionary in Mexico and California; it is worthy to note that the first Mass in the Diocese of Victoria was celebrated on Nootka Island in 1789 by a Franciscan missionary.
