Crossing the road, finding my neighbour

On a snowy Friday, February 3, 2017, staff of the Diocese of Victoria attended a Faith Formation day titled Crossing the Road, Finding my Neighbour, featuring Dr. Gwen Point. This Day was repeated as our Annual Diocesan Conference at St. Edward’s parish in Duncan on Saturday, February 4.

Dr. Point spoke movingly about three facets of our interactions with our First Nations brothers and sisters, inviting us to consider the history, reality and hope of our relationships.

At the end of the day, working in pairs, we twisted cedar bark strands to make bracelets. First Nations tradition says the first item you make must be given away, so I challenged all staff and participants at the Diocesan Conference to ‘cross the road’ and find a First Nations neighbour to give their bracelet to.

Our day began with grace, as we celebrated Mass together, and concluded with hope for the future of our relationships with our brothers and sisters. And surrounding the day was the love we have for God and for each other, and for all those who are our neighbours.
