Farewell to Fr. Karam Alraban
by Sandi Digras, Church of the Ascension
On April 21, 2016, more than 130 parishioners crowded into the hall and classrooms at Church of the Ascension to share a potluck dinner to honour and say ‘farewell’ to Fr. Karam Alraban.
It was my privilege to be the Emcee for the evening, and we enjoyed an entertaining program of music and tributes to our beloved Pastor. Hugs, some accompanied with a few tears, kept Fr. Karam busy throughout the night.
Our interim pastor, Fr. Bernard Lee, was introduced at the beginning of the evening, and he shared with us his story of missionary work.
The farewell party was organized by the Liturgy committee around the colours of the Iraqi and Canadian flags. Fr. Karam’s closing speech reflected on his refugee journey full of fear, which led to the love in the hall that evening. In his words “the evening was absolutely amazing!”
