Synod on the Family

“The future passes through the family.” Pope Francis

Dear Friends in Christ,

In light of the Extraordinary Synod in Rome last fall and of the upcoming Synod of Bishops in October on “the vocation and the mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world,” we are planning for Diocesan-wide reflection and dialogue on this very important topic. This is an opportunity for understanding deeper the Church’s vision of the family and through reflection and responses, to provide feedback to the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops for the upcoming Synod of Bishops in Rome this October.

The following events and actions are planned for your active participation. Both a short and a longer version of the reflection questions from the Extraordinary Synod are accessible on the Diocesan website for parishes and others to access.

Pastors are encouraged to make these questions known to their Parish Pastoral Councils and parishioners for reflection and dialogue.  Please submit written responses to the Pastoral Center by March 6 to the attention of Glen Palahicky.

There will be three Diocesan gatherings facilitating reflection, dialogue and feedback:

  • St. Joseph the Worker, Victoria, on Tuesday, February 10th from 7 – 9 p.m.
  • St. Peter’s, Nanaimo, on Tuesday, February 17th from 7 – 9 p.m.
  • Christ the King, Courtenay, on Sunday, February 22nd from 4 – 7 p.m.

For planning purposes, please register by phone or email to the Pastoral Center: Phone: (250) 479-1331 Email: or

This is a graced opportunity for all of us to realize a little more deeply who we are as Church.

In Communion,

Most Reverend Gary Gordon
Bishop of Victoria
