Our Faith Journey: Preparing Young Children for Celebrating the Sacraments

Dear People of God:

Faith is not born in isolation but develops through relationships under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; first, most often in the home through the example and guidance of parents, and then through the agency of the parish community and the school community.

In responding to the need to support parents in their fundamental role as the first teachers of their children, the Diocese undertook and has completed a review of children's formation in preparation for celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation. Initiated in 2006 by the Bishop's Advisory Committee for Children's Catechesis, the Committee's work has resulted in a comprehensive foundational program which engages and offers familiies, parishes and schools a practical resource for initiating children in the lifelong journey of faith, rooted in the Sunday Liturgy.

Our Faith Journey: Preparing Young Children for Celebrating the Sacraments draws on two important Church documents: Rome's General Directory for Catechesis, and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishop's national catechetical curriculum for children, the Criteria for Catechesis: from Infancy to Age Eighteen. Both are directly linked to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
