For half a century, the Benedictine Sisters of the House of Bread Monastery have been a beacon of prayer, hospitality, and service on Vancouver Island. Nestled by the tranquil beauty of Westwood Lake, their community has flourished as a vibrant monastic presence, balancing personal and communal prayer with Christian ministry.
From their earliest days, the Sisters answered a call to share the rich spirituality of the Benedictine tradition with those around them. Inspired by the Eucharistic focus of the Rule of St. Benedict, the name "House of Bread" symbolizes their deep desire to nourish others with Scripture, prayer, and the presence of Christ.
Over the years, they have built a legacy of hospitality, embracing St. Benedict's teaching that "all guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ." With a steadfast commitment to simplicity, stewardship of creation, and outreach to those in need, the Sisters have touched countless lives, providing a sacred space of solace, reflection, and growth for their community and beyond. We honour their journey of faith, perseverance, and service.
Below, you can read cherished memories and stories from the celebration of their extraordinary 50 years of ministry and monastic life. Join us in celebrating the profound impact the House of Bread Monastery has had on Vancouver Island and far beyond!
