Help Restore Our Garry Oak Ecosystem

Feb 26, 2025 2:38:02 PM

Our 2025 Garry Oak Restoration Project is kicking off on March 8th—all are welcome to join!

Starting Saturday, March 8th, volunteers will come together every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month to help restore the important Garry Oak ecosystem on the Sacred Heart, St. Andrew’s High School, and Pastoral Centre property.

Once widespread across southeastern Vancouver Island, Garry Oak ecosystems have dwindled due to urbanization and invasive species. These habitats are not just ecologically significant; they hold deep cultural importance. Coast Salish peoples have relied on the Garry Oak ecosystem for food, medicines, and traditional practices for centuries. Today, invasive species like English ivy, Scotch broom, and Himalayan blackberry threaten the native plants and wildlife that call this ecosystem home.

Garry Oak ecosystems are among the most diverse in coastal British Columbia, home to more plant species than any other terrestrial habitat. Many exist nowhere else in Canada and live alongside over 150 bird, amphibian, reptile, and mammal species, and 800 insect and mite species that rely on Garry Oak trees.

As climate change progresses, these ecosystems may become even more vital. Their species are adapted to warm temperatures and summer droughts—conditions expected to expand in Canada. Protecting these habitats now will help ensure their survival for future generations.

This restoration effort is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, meet others in our community, and put faith into action.

In Laudato Si', Pope Francis calls us to an ecological conversion—a shift in how we care for the world around us. It’s not just about making small changes like recycling (though that helps!); it’s about a deeper transformation in how we live. It means choosing simplicity, reducing consumption, and speaking up for policies that protect the planet. At its core, this call is about justice—especially for the poor, who are often the most impacted by environmental damage.

As we celebrate the Jubilee of Hope, we’re reminded that hope isn’t just something we wait for—it’s something we can grow! Every time we care for the earth, we’re making a difference, whether it’s planting a tree, conserving resources, or speaking up for change. These small actions add up to something big: a healthier planet for future generations.

Please join us in removing invasive species and making space for native plants to thrive! Pruners and shovels are provided—just bring your gloves, safety glasses, and water. If heavy rain is forecasted for Saturday, the restoration will be moved to Sunday from 1:00 pm–4:00 pm. All are welcome, whether you can come for only one Saturday or a series of them!
