Walking with Mary: Behind Marian Devotion and the Significance of May

May 1, 2025 7:00:00 AM

In every journey of faith, we are invited to walk not just toward God, but with God—and with those who have walked the road before us. Among the most beloved of these companions is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Around the world, millions of Catholics embark on Marian pilgrimages or devotions, visiting sacred sites dedicated to Our Lady. These spiritual journeys, moments of reflection, and acts of devotion are a way to deepen our relationship with Christ through His mother.

What Is a Marian Pilgrimage?
A Marian pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred site associated with an apparition, miracle, or deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. From Lourdes in France to Fatima in Portugal and Guadalupe in Mexico, these destinations have become places of prayer, healing, and grace.

But Marian devotion doesn’t require an international flight. It can be a visit to a local shrine, a prayer walk with fellow parishioners, or even a personal day of reflection in nature—carrying Mary’s example of humility and courage in your heart.

These moments remind us that we are all on a pilgrimage—not just to a place, but toward a deeper encounter with God. Mary, as the first disciple and model of faith, walks with us. Through her “yes” to God, she teaches us to trust, to hope, and to surrender.

Why Is May the Month of Mary ?
Have you ever noticed that May feels especially full of light, hope, and new life? The Church, in its wisdom, dedicates this month to Mary, whose own life is a symbol of hope and new beginnings.

The tradition of honouring Mary in May dates back to at least the 13th century, gaining popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries. May, with its blooming flowers and lengthening days, became a natural symbol of Mary's beauty, virtue, and fruitfulness. She is, after all, the "Mystical Rose" and the one who bore the Light of the World.

Some parishes hold May Crownings, where children place a crown of flowers on a statue of Mary, symbolizing her queenship and our love for her. Others pray the Rosary, reflect on the Marian apparitions, or participate in acts of charity in her honour.

In dedicating this month to Mary, we are invited to pause and let her example lead us closer to Jesus. Her unwavering faith and gentle presence remind us that we are never alone in our trials. Like a loving mother, she intercedes for us, encourages us, and points us always toward her Son.

Making Your Own Marian Pilgrimage
This May, consider making a small pilgrimage or devotion of your own:

              -Our Lady of Fatima (Victoria)
-Our Lady of Grace (Salt Spring Island)
-Our Lady of the Assumption (Saanichton)
-Our Lady of the Rosary* (Langford), Mass is currently celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Chapel
-Our Lady of Victory Mission (Gabriola Island)
-Our Lady Queen of Peace (Victoria)
- Make a pilgrimage to one of the Diocese of Victoria’s Jubilee sites and pray the Rosary.
- Walk and pray the Rosary through a park or peaceful neighbourhood, inviting Mary into your everyday journey.
- Organize a prayer walk or Marian devotion with friends, family, or fellow parishioners.
- Offer fresh flowers at your parish’s Marian shrine as a symbol of love and reverence.
- Take time to reflect on Mary’s presence in your life—how has she inspired, guided, or comforted you?

Whether near or far, long or short, a pilgrimage is a beautiful way to honour Mary and re-centre your spiritual life.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. May we, like you, always say “yes” to God’s invitation.
