Ottawa – On Friday, 1 May 2026, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) President, Bishop Pierre Goudreault, and the CCCB Vice President, Archbishop Donald Bolen, met with Prime Minister Mark Carney in his office on Parliament Hill. They were accompanied by the CCCB General Secretary, Rev. Jean Vézina, and the CCCB Advisor for Indigenous and Government Relations, Mrs. Tracy Blain.
The CCCB has a responsibility to contribute to public life in Canada in a spirit of dialogue by communicating the concerns of the Bishops and the Catholic faithful, informed by the Gospel and the Church’s social teaching. In a pluralistic and secular society, the Church’s mission encourages engagement with elected officials, fostering mutual understanding and trust to identify shared values and objectives for the common good. At a time of important changes in Canada and amid current global uncertainty, the meeting offered an opportunity to raise awareness of the social impact of public policy. Topics included Canada’s reduction of international humanitarian aid, world peace, and the need to remain attentive to those who are most vulnerable: the poor, the marginalized, and those who are terminally ill and at the end of life.
The CCCB remains committed to contributing to public discussions on legislation and policy in a manner rooted in the Gospel, attentive to the common good, and respectful of the constitutional rights of all Canadians, including those whose lives are guided by religious convictions. The CCCB Presidency is grateful to the Prime Minister for his time and looks forward to future opportunities for constructive engagement with him and other parliamentarians.
