Passing The Light: A Year End Mass Celebration for St. Andrew's Graduates

Jun 23, 2026 4:48:25 PM

As we reach the end of the school year, we recognize all the hard work of the students of St. Andrew’s Regional High School, and in a special way, this year's Grade 12 graduates. Their graduation marks an important milestone shaped by learning, friendship, faith, and growth in Catholic education.

Each year, the St. Andrew's Regional High School community gathers to celebrate this moment with a special tradition: the passing of the light from the Grade 11 students to the graduating class. In this simple and beautiful gesture, the younger students offer a sign of encouragement, blessing, and continuity. This year Fr. Alfie held a beautiful Mass for the students and staff, followed by his simple and beautiful gesture.

The light symbolizes more than the end of a school journey. It reminds graduates that they are called to carry forward all they have received during their years at St. Andrew’s — the values they have learned, the relationships they have built, and the faith that will continue to guide them. One graduate, Max Geras had this to say about the passing of the torch tradition:

"...I find that to be a beautiful way to remind the grade 12's that our stories do not end at graduation, but are just the beginning of a whole new chapter of our lives. It made me desire to not only let the way I live my life shine light, but also made me want to be the first spark of a fire that is fueled by my love of God, to be who God wants me to be so that I might set the world on fire (cf. St. Catherine of Siena)"

As the graduates receive the light, they are sent into the world with a mission: to shine with compassion, wisdom, courage, and service wherever they go. Whether they are continuing their studies, beginning new work, or discerning the path ahead, they do not go alone. They go with the support of their school community, their families, and the grace of God.

This tradition also speaks to the strength of a Catholic school community. One class encourages the next. One generation carries on what they have received from their teachers, peers, and the greater community.

We celebrate our graduates with joy and excitement, and we pray that they will carry this light forward into the world, bringing hope to others and remaining rooted in the faith and values that have helped shape them.
