History:
Apart from the possibility of much earlier contact with the Spanish, the people of Ucluelet encountered Catholicism with the arrival of Bishop Charles Seghers and Fr Augustin Brabant. They arrived from Victoria on the schooner Surprise, on April 18, 1874. Their arrival was greeted by Chief Wishkoutl and all members of the Ucluelet Band. Seventy-five children were baptized during this visit.

Prior to the end of 1952, priests from Christie Residential School (first built in 1899 and located on Meares Island) held irregular church services in Ucluelet—at homes, the pool hall, or other halls. Fr. Michael Kearney OMI, who was residing at Christie School, spearheaded the effort to build a church in Ucluelet. On Christmas Eve, 1952, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church. Bishop Hill consecrated the church on May 31, 1953. Until 2010, priests of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate served Holy Family Parish.

Located in the heart of downtown Ucluelet, Holy Family Church is also partially surrounded by an open green space and forest, which provide quiet refuge for some of God’s other creatures, including many deer, a few raccoons, feral cats, bald eagles, lots of crows and the occasional black bear. During the summer, numerous visitors from across the country and from beyond our borders join us for Mass and sometimes for coffee afterwards.
