Pilgrims of Hope are warmly invited to attend Mass on the first and third Saturdays of each month at 9:30 am. While no resident pastor lives on the island, visitors are still welcome outside of these Mass times and can access the church via a door code.

History:
While Fr. D’Herbimez was building his college in the summer of 1863, he sent Frs. Pandossy and Gradidier and Br. Blanchet to found a mission among the Kwakiult Indians on the north and northwestern shores of Vancouver Island and on adjacent islands. On August 26 of that year, Fr. Pandossy established the Mission of the Assumption near Fort Rupert. Br. Blanchet built a log cabin and the little community moved in on December 18. After a short while, Fr. Grandidier was taken ill and Fr. LeJacq was sent to replace him.  The Fort Rupert mission, which was later moved to Harbledown Island and was called St. Michael’s, was never a successful one. 
 
In early 1935, Mrs. Dorothy Blomfield, a very devout Catholic, made a request of the Bishop for a priest to visit Alert Bay to conduct Mass. In the beginning the visiting priest only came on Easter and Christmas and sometimes he could squeeze in a few extra visits. In the 30s and 40s before the church was built, the services were held in the home of Dorothea Croquet but mainly in the home of Mrs. Dorothy Studdy (Bloomfield). In July of 1940, the Archbishop of Vancouver made his first visit to Alert Bay. While there he confirmed two people and said Sunday Mass in the Lounge of the Harbor Inn, attended by Fr. Bradley. Mrs. Studdy and Fr. Bradley were the prime movers in getting the church built in Alert Bay. Fr. Bradley received a $1,000 grant from the Catholic Church Extension Society and Mrs. Studdy, an artist, designed the building. It is thought that William Lawson donated the land. Mr. George Skinner was the contractor. On April 25, Easter Sunday, 1943 the first Mass was held in our Lady of Assumption. However, after a few years the building was not used. It was not until the 1950s that Corporal Jack Henneberry revived the church.
 
In 1957, Fr. Potanko arrived and soon had the Catholic community clearing bushes and trees from around the church. They also built an addition to the church which was used as accommodations for the priest. Fr. Potanko also carved some statues for use as decoration in the church.
 
In 1958, Fr. O’Grady replaced Fr. Potanko and served for two years. In 1960 there were two priests serving Alert Bay, Fr. W. Beatch and Fr. Holzapfel. Under Fr. Beatch a rectory was built, located up the hill from the church. In the 1970s and 1980s there were only visiting priests.
 
In 1987, there was further restoration to the church. All the work was done by a faithful group whenever they could spare time.
 
Today, the Our Lady of Assumption Church is still standing and providing spiritual services to the Catholic community in Alert Bay because of the many men and women in the past and in the present who continue to invest their time, talent, and treasure for the sake of the Kingdom of God. The Oblates built a chapel and industrial school but only a few of the Indians were really well-disposed towards them. The reason for the failure of the mission are many but the main two were the disinterest of the First Nations people; and others who attended were already following teachings of the Protestant ministers who had visited there before the Catholic community was established. For eleven years the Oblates tried to break down the opposition but being short of men they gave up.
