The original church in Tofino was built in the 1950s, through the initiative of Fr. Francis Sutherland OMI. Much of the building material was salvaged from the old airport buildings, which had been constructed near Long Beach during the Second World War. Fr. Sutherland named the church after the patron saint of his own name.
 
In 1968, Fr. Larry Mackey OMI initiated the assembly of a new church building. He ordered a pre-fabricated Pan-abode style church, which was paid for by Andy Robertson. The old church building was moved back on the lot, turned sideways, and attached to the new church for use as a hall. Prior to 2010, priests of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate served St. Francis of Assisi Parish, which is now served by a Diocesan priest.
 
The church is adorned with stained glass windows that reflect our Catholic faith and the surrounding West Coast environment. Views from out front of the church include Clayoquot Sound, Meares Island, snow-clad mountains—and the occasional Orca whale. During summer months, visitors from many parts of Canada, and from numerous other countries, often form the majority of those in attendance for our weekend Mass.

Welcome to Holy Cross Catholic Parish (h2)

We are located at 4049 Gordon Head Rd. in Victoria BC, near both the University of Victoria and the Camosun College campuses. Holy Cross Parish serves the needs of 350 families in the area as well as the needs of the student population at both the University and the College.
