COVID-19: Palm Crosses

Apr 1, 2020 1:05:00 PM

Given that most of the churches in the Diocese of Victoria are closed due to COVID-19, a creative suggestion has come forward with regards to the palms that may have been delivered to the parishes. With no practical means of distribution to parishioners, given the directives to continue to practice social distancing, the Bishop would like to recommend the following:

As the palms are used to recall the Messianic entrance of the Lord Jesus into Jerusalem, coming to complete his Pascal Mystery, the palms could be folded into crosses by a volunteer and given to parishioners at the first Mass when we are permitted to gather again. This visible sign of unity would be a wonderful way to commemorate our return to the communal celebration of the Eucharist once the COVID-19 pandemic ends.

With the benefit of technology, there are many YouTube tutorials to choose from (click here):

The need to continue to be vigilant and keep our parishioners healthy by asking them to stay at home and practice social distancing remains in place.

The recent document entitled Hope, Gratitude and Solidarity, prepared by the Religious Leaders in Canada, reminds us that it is important to maintain a posture of attentive caring towards our neighbours as we continue to trust in our loving and ever merciful God, the source of all hope.
