The Diocese of Victoria understands the needs of young people are unique and must be supported by the entire Catholic community, with the goal of actively involving and empowering youth and young adults within our local parish communities, the Diocese, and beyond.
With the help of the Holy Spirit, we want to assist our youth and young adults in cultivating a deep and lasting relationship with Jesus Christ within the Church and to help find ways to strengthen that relationship so that when faced with the trials and challenges that the world may present them, our young people will have a solid foundation with which to endure and thrive in faith, hope and charity.
Youth and Young Adult ministry programs are offered at individual parishes in our Diocese. The Office of Faith Formation and Evangelization is here to support to assist pastors, youth and young adult coordinators with current programs and to help cultivate new and exciting programs throughout our Diocese. We are here to advocate and be a source of encouragement and inspiration for the youth and young adults of our Diocese. Young people today face many challenges and we need to do all that we can to support them on their faith journey.
Guiding Principles of Youth and Young Adult Ministry:
- To call the Catholic faith community to continually renew its affective and effective option for young people.
- To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person.
- To invite and empower young people to live as missionary disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today.
- To draw young people to participate responsibly in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community.
Young Adult Ministry:
- To connect young adults with Jesus Christ
- To connect young adults with the Church
- To connect young adults with the mission of the Church in the world
- To connect young adults with a peer community
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria's University Catholic Chaplaincy provides a lively, faithful community for Catholics at the University of Victoria and Camosun College. Working closely with the evangelization efforts of Catholic Christian Outreach mission staff and the student leadership of the Catholic Student Association, the Chaplain provides prayer and faith study groups, spiritual direction and vocational discernment, retreat programs, catechetical opportunities with weekly shared meals, Sacramental preparation and pastoral counselling. Weekday Masses and opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation are offered at the UVic Interfaith Chapel; Sunday Campus Masses are hosted at Holy Cross Church on Gordon Head Road.
This ministry fosters spiritually supportive friendships and the experience of a caring community among students, faculty and staff. The Chaplaincy website includes links to the UVic/Camosun Catholic Students Association, provides information about the services of the Catholic Chaplaincy, and gives up-to-date information about Catholic social and educational activities on campus, connections to local and international volunteer opportunities, and online Catholic resources.
